Jesus as human and god

In the late days of the Savior's life we really see more of His character, and more of how He is like us, in only certain ways of course. In John 18:11 Jesus says to Peter after he gets ambitious and starts chopping ears, "Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?" The Lord says similar words in the Book of Mormon in 3 Nephi 11:11, saying he drank out of the bitter cup which God gave Him. He says, "I have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world." These words are clear and a bit potent in describing a bitter cup, but there's so much more behind this story.

When I see how willing Christ was to do whatever His father asked, it frankly is amazing to me. In class we discussed a lot in the scriptures about particularly His suffering in Gethsemane. It is not how we see depicted in artwork often. Christ was not just praying with sadness in His face. In the verses it describes Him in agony, falling on his face, asking God to take this duty away from Him if possible. When has Christ ever asked God if He didn't have to do something? Never! In my opinion Jesus must really have felt extreme pain and weariness He had never experienced, enough to ask God if He didn't have to do it. I find much help in thinking of Jesus as more alike to me then we sometimes describe. He is glorious and our God, but He also was human. He felt the stupid things we feel that seem trivial, but He knows those pains. He went through so much for us, and we need to realize He was and is a real person. We can relate to Him on some level. That is why He is such an incredible Savior, for he is the prime example of doing something when we don't want to! Jesus did not want to perform the Atonement, but He did it. He did not give in to that human side. I love Him for that. We never have to give in to our human side, we can be more than a selfish person, we can be like Him, as we learn more about Him.
